Approved Thargomindah Animal Inspection Programs

Bulloo Shire Council conduct an annual animal inspection of all properties inside the Thargomindah Designated Town area.

Residents are advised of the dates of the Animal Inspection Program at least 14 by not more thatn 28 calendar days before the start of the inspecion program.

The purpose of the inspection is to enforce the Animal Management Act 2008 (Dogs and Cats) and the Bulloo Shire Council Local Law No.2 (Animal Management) within the Thargomindah Designated Town area, in particular:

  • ascertain ownership of all unregistered animals, to enforce registration and permits; and
  • ensure all animal enclosures comply with requirements

Fines are issued for any animals that are in breach of the Animal Management Act 2008 (Dogs and Cats) and Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management).

Infringement Notices will be based on Council’s Adopted Fees and Charges 2023-2024, and will be issued for all offences.

The Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 requires that all dogs throughout the shire must be registered.  The Act also requires that all cats and dogs must be microchipped when purchased or given away.

Your most important responsibilities as a dog owner are:

  • register your dog before they reach three months of age and every year after that
  • ensure your dog always wears its collar and tag
  • walk your dog on a lead when in a public place, except in off-leash areas
  • keep your dog quiet (see barking dogs)
  • keep your dog in your yard
  • don’t let your dog attack or frighten people or animals (see dangerous, menacing and restricted dogs)
  • pick up after your dog when it is in a public place
  • Queensland Government legislation now requires that all dogs must be microchipped when purchased or given away

Council encourages residents to consider the benefits of desexing pets in an aim to reduce unplanned breeding and prevent unwanted kittens or puppies being abandoned.

State Government Animal Management Act Introduction

Microchipping of cats and dogs became compulsory under State Government laws from 1 July 2009. All cats and dogs are required to be microchipped from 8 weeks of age and over.
